Room Acoustics and Sound Quality — What to Check Before Your Event
The best sound system cannot compensate for poor room acoustics. That is why, before any major event, it is worth looking at several factors that directly affect speech intelligibility and music quality.
Reverberation time is the key acoustic parameter. Rooms with lots of glass, concrete and hard surfaces produce a long reverb that blurs sound and makes it harder to understand a speaker. In such spaces we deploy line-array systems with narrow vertical dispersion, directing sound precisely at the audience and minimising reflections from walls and ceiling.
Ambient noise level can be surprising. Air conditioning, ventilation, street traffic or adjacent halls can generate background noise of 50–60 dB, forcing us to use a more powerful PA than the headcount alone would suggest. During a site visit we measure the noise floor so we can size the system correctly.
Audience layout affects speaker configuration. A theatre setup (rows of chairs) calls for a different arrangement than a banquet (round tables) or a U-shape. For panel discussions we additionally set up table microphones or ceiling microphone arrays.
